Ferritic stainless steels are straight-chromium
400 series grades that cannot be hardened by heat treatment
and only moderately hardened by cold working. They usually
have a chromium content of between 10 to 20% and lower
carbon contents than the martensitic stainless steels.
Ferritic stainless steels are magnetic, have good ductility
and resistance to corrosion and oxidation. They are
inherently stronger than carbon steel and are utilized
in applications where thinner materials and reduced
weight are advantageous. They are often specified due
to their superior corrosion resistance and resistance
to scaling at elevated temperatures.
