Sandmeyer Steel Company Donates Apollo Monument to U.S. Space Walk of Fame Foundation
Philadelphia, PA – May 15, 2008
Sandmeyer Steel Company has once again
participated in honoring the workers and astronauts
of the U.S. Space Program by donating their third stainless
steel monument to the U.S. Space Walk of Fame Foundation
in Titusville, Florida. This monument is over 14 feet
high and contains almost 1 ton of 316L stainless steel.
It will be dedicated to the Apollo program, which culminated
in seven manned missions to the moon. Dedication ceremonies
will be in the summer of 2009. “We are proud
to honor the efforts of the thousands of workers in
the space program,” said Rodney C. Sandmeyer,
Executive Vice President.
Sandmeyer Steel Company, based in Philadelphia, previously
contributed two stainless monuments to the Space Walk
of Fame. One monument commemorates the Gemini
program, and one is dedicated to the Mercury program.
The Mercury monument is a duplicate of a monument that
was fabricated by the Company for NASA in 1964 and still
stands on Launch Complex 14 at the Kennedy Space Center.
Under that monument is buried a time capsule which contains
memorabilia from the Mercury space program. The
time capsule will be opened in 2464, the 500th anniversary
of the conclusion of the Mercury program.
The U.S. Space Walk of Fame Foundation is a 501(c)(3)
organization of active and retired space workers with
a mission of erecting monuments to the different space
programs along the Indian River in Titusville, facing
the Vehicle Assembly Building and launch pads on Cape
Canaveral.
Sandmeyer Steel Company was founded in 1952 by the late
Paul C. Sandmeyer. Family owned and managed, the
Company is recognized as a leading producer of stainless
steel and nickel alloy plate products used in capital
equipment for chemical and other industries. The
Company services customers throughout the world.
