Sandmeyer Steel Company Hosts
Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day
Philadelphia, PA - April 28, 2011

The most common response on the children's evaluation forms for Sandmeyer Steel Company's Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day program was "I liked seeing what my dad does," and the most common suggestion for next year was "to spend more time with my dad." Although this day was developed by the Ms. Foundation in an effort to expose children to expanding opportunities in the workplace and to stress the importance of staying in school, what ultimately means more to most kids is just being with their mother or father. And on Thursday, April 28th, 17 children of Sandmeyer Steel Company employees had the chance to do just that.
Of those who attended, more than half participated last year and so were seasoned veterans of the event which featured a full day of activities. After breakfast and some ice-breaker activities, the group enjoyed a presentation on the importance of safety in the workplace, especially in a manufacturing environment like Sandmeyer Steel Company. Following this instruction, the kids had a chance to try on various pieces of Personal Protective Equipment. They were then given their own safety glasses and hearing protection before being led on a tour of the plant as well as the office.
The children learned how material is selected while visiting the Application Department. They also watched "water catch fire" in the Plasma Department and got hands-on experience with Sandmeyer Steel's new Techno Marker equipment. The tour wrapped up with a quick experiment in Quality Control which allowed the children to act as Quality Control Inspectors by making sure that keepsake plaques were, in fact, the proper size and also that their names were spelled correctly and that the year was correct. This plaque, which each child took home, was a 3/16" thick stainless steel plate in the shape of the Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day logo and etched with each child's name.
Everyone then enjoyed a snack and had the opportunity to think back to the tour and draw posters of their parents at their work stations. The morning concluded with more interactive activities, including Mad Libs and a guessing game. At lunch time, the parents rejoined the children and were given an opportunity to look at all the posters and try to guess which posters were drawn by their children.
Following lunch and the presentation of Certificates of Appreciation by President and Chief Executive Officer Ronald P. Sandmeyer, Jr., and Rodney C. Sandmeyer, Executive Vice President, the children spent time with their parents at their individual work areas. This clearly was the highlight of the day! The children of plant employees spent the remainder of the afternoon working in the office under the guidance of several volunteer sponsors. All of the children enjoyed going on a Signature Treasure Hunt and interviewing some Sandmeyer employees about their own career choices and jobs. The afternoon wouldn't have been complete without another snack, while piggy bank prizes were given out to those who guessed the correct amount of candy in each bank.
Hopefully, the children left Sandmeyer Steel Company with a better understanding of what the Company does as well as a clearer picture of what their mom or dad does during those hours they are away from home.
