TAKE OUR DAUGHTERS TO WORK
DAY
Philadelphia, PA - April 26,
2001 --
"It was so much fun!"
"My favorite part was answering the phones!"
"I can't wait to come back!"
Do these sound like things someone would say about coming to work?
Well, these are just a few of the comments made by the girls who
participated in Sandmeyer Steel Company's Take Our Daughters to
Work program on Thursday, April 26, 2001.
This was our fourth consecutive year of participating in this
special day, which was developed in 1993 by the Ms. Foundation
in response to research showing a need to help adolescent girls
remain self-confident and strong.
The day began with juice and donuts as the girls got acquainted
and reacquainted with one another. Five of the girls had been
coming faithfully each year since Sandmeyer Steel first started
hosting them in 1998, and over the years many have even exchanged
email addresses. In response to suggestions submitted at the
end of last year's program, our facility tour was shortened
and more time was spent engaged in interactive activities where
the girls were encouraged to focus on their abilities, to speak
their minds, and to trust their own judgment.
Following lunch shared by the girls and their sponsors, the
participants had an opportunity for a photo shoot with Ron Sandmeyer
Jr., President and CEO, and Rod Sandmeyer, Executive Vice President.
Each girl was also presented with some mementos of her work
day which included a t-shirt bearing the "Girl Force" slogan
of the Ms. Foundation for Take Our Daughters to Work Day, a
stainless steel Girl Force medallion cut on Sandmeyer Steel's
own abrasive waterjet machine, and a book entitled
The Girls
Life Guide to Growing Up as well as some office supplies
for the girls to use at school and at home.
The afternoon consisted of the girls shadowing their sponsors
and other office employees. This gave them the opportunity for
some hands-on experience, which many have proclaimed is the
best part of the day. Overwhelmingly, they all start out asking
for papers to shred but quickly learn just how monotonous that
job can be! Other real-life activities included a shift on the
switchboard under the supervision of receptionist, Judy Backert,
and lending a hand stuffing envelopes for the Accounting and
Sales Departments.
Echoes of "see you at the Company Picnic" could be heard as
each girl left for her home, no doubt to soak her aching feet
and rest her weary eyes!
Many thanks to the members of the Daughters Day Committee for
another successful program!
