What is Duplex Stainless
Steel?
Sandmeyer Steel Company fabricates
many stainless steel products from duplex stainless
steel plate. Duplex has improved strength when compared
to austenitic stainless steel and is a useful material
in many industries where resistance to corrosion, erosion,
cracking, and heat deformation are essential. Sandmeyer
Steel Company has duplex stainless steel plate, stainless
plate, and nickel alloy plate necessary to meet customers’
stringent corrosion and strength requirements. Please
visit the Stainless
Steel Plate Inventory page for more information.
Properties of Duplex Stainless
Steel Plate
Duplex stainless steel is valued for its high levels of
corrosion resistance as well as its excellent mechanical
properties which can be attributed to its composition
of austenitic and ferritic crystal structures. Containing
relatively large amounts of chromium (between 18% and
28%) as well as moderate amounts of nickel (between 4.5%
and 8%), duplex stainless steel plate is also resistant
to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride stress corrosion
cracking.
Types of Duplex Stainless Steel
Plate
With an extensive inventory of stainless steel plate grades
Sandmeyer Steel Company is able to provide duplex 2304,
2205, and 2507. Alloys 2304 and 2205 are common duplex
stainless steel grades while alloy 2507 is the most common
type of super duplex stainless steel. Super duplex contains
further alloying elements including chromium, molybdenum,
and nitrogen which lead to enhanced resistance to pitting
and crevice corrosion.
2205 Duplex Stainless Steel Plate
Alloy 2205 is composed of 22% chromium, 5-6% nickel, nitrogen,
and 3% molybdenum and is known for its toughness and impact
strength as well as resistance to localized, general,
and stress corrosion. Resistant to damage by nearly all
corrosive media, 2205 duplex stainless steel plate has
low thermal expansion and high thermal conductivity properties.
2304 Duplex Stainless Steel Plate
With corrosion resistance similar to 316L
stainless steel plate, alloy 2304 contains 23% chromium,
4% nickel, and no molybdenum. 2304 duplex stainless steel
plate has enhanced mechanical properties, i.e. impact
strength, yield strength, and also has improved stress
corrosion resistance.
2507 Duplex Stainless Steel
A super duplex, alloy 2507 contains 25% chromium, 7% nickel,
and 4% molybdenum. The ideal choice for applications involving
highly corrosive media or requiring superior strength,
2507 duplex stainless steel is an excellent thermal conductor
with a low thermal expansion coefficient and, additionally,
resists localized and general corrosion as well as stress
corrosion cracking.
Sandmeyer Steel Company maintains the largest single-site
inventory of duplex and regular stainless steel plate
and nickel alloy plate. To view thicknesses for specific
