Invar plate, also known as Invar 36, is an austenitic nickel-iron expansion alloy containing 36% nickel. Invar plate has an extremely low coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE). Sandmeyer Steel Company stocks Invar 36 for applications in the aerospace composite tooling and die markets, and other industrial applications where demanding conditions require minimum thermal expansion and high dimensional stability.
Invar plate exhibits the following fabrication characteristics:
- Low coefficient of thermal expansion from -418°F (-250°C) to 392°F (200°C)
- Good fatigue and mechanical properties at cryogenic temperatures
- Moderately high strength along with good ductility and toughness
- Can be welded using filler wire with expansion rates similar to those of the base metal
These properties allow invar plate to be fabricated using methods similar to austenitic stainless steels.
Invar Plate Available at Sandmeyer Steel Company
SSC Invar 36 is available in thicknesses ranging from .250" (6.3mm) through 4.00" (101.6mm). Invar 36 is ideal for applications that require dimensional stability, including aerospace composite tooling and precision instrumentation, marine components, wind turbines, and laser components.
Sandmeyer Steel Company offers SSC Invar 36 from stock in full plate or custom cut sizes. Utilizing state-of-the-art cutting systems such as abrasive waterjet, bandsaw, or plasma systems, invar plates can be cut with exact precision for finished or near-net shape parts.
