Stainless Steel Plate
Alloy 321 Stainless Steel Aerospace Applications
Alloys used in aerospace applications must withstand exposure to extreme temperatures and meet high mechanical demands. Type 321 stainless steel, an austenitic alloy, is stabilized with titanium, making it resistant to intergranular attack caused by chromium carbide precipitation. When exposed to temperatures in the chromium carbide precipitation range (800 to 1500°F), type 321 stainless steel maintains its stability. As a result, alloy 321 is used throughout the aerospace industry in such components as exhaust ducts, flanges and piston engine exhaust manifolds.
Alloy 321 Stainless Steel Properties
Aircraft components, such as piston engine exhaust manifolds, are exposed to temperatures that are quite extreme. Type 321 stainless steel has proven to be a grade of steel plate that can withstand temperatures from 800 to 1500°F and resist oxidation up to 1500°F. Additional 321 stainless steel properties include enhanced creep and stress rupture resistance and excellent machinability. Type 321 stainless steel will not lose its structural integrity from the high temperatures and extreme conditions that are standard for aerospace engines, nor will durability be compromised as a result of corrosion. Comparable to Alloy 304, this stainless steel grade is not subject to intergranular attack or thermal fatigue. Type 321 stainless steel is an ideal material of construction for aerospace components, such as piston engine exhaust manifolds, exhaust ducts and flanges. See this alloy's general properties for more information on its chemical analysis, physical properties, mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and fabrication.
