Stainless Steel Plate
Alloy 410 Stainless Steel & Petroleum Refining
The petroleum refining process involves the handling of semi-corrosive substances that are often pressurized and heated to extreme temperatures. As a result, the equipment and components that comprise a refinery or petrochemical plant are fabricated using durable alloys that can withstand the harsh conditions of the refining industry. Stainless steel is one such material. Due to its content of chromium, a resilient chromium-oxide film forms on the steel’s surface, making it highly resistant to corrosive substances. Alloy 410, a martensitic stainless steel, plays a specific role in the refining and petrochemical industry and is an ideal material to be used where high-strength, moderate-corrosion resistance and heat resistance is required.
Alloy 410 Stainless Steel Properties
Alloy 410 is a martensitic stainless steel that hardens when it is heat treated. Chromium accounts for 12% of its overall chemical composition, giving it the corrosion-resistant properties of stainless steel. Known for its strength, type 410 stainless steel is ideal for petrochemical components that are subjected to repeat abrasion and wear. Alloy 410 exhibits limited corrosion resistivity and as a result, should be used only in environments containing weak or diluted acetic acid, naptha, nitric acid, and sulfuric acid. It performs well in applications where low hydrogen sulfide exists. In its annealed state, 410 is ductile, easily formed, and machinable, but presents limited weldability. A post-weld heat treatment is required to prevent hydrogen stress corrosion cracking. In the petroleum refining industry, Alloy 410 stainless steel is primarily used in the construction of pumps, valve trim, tray valves, and fractionation towers.
