The chemical and petrochemical process industries use a wide range of corrosion-resistant stainless steel and nickel alloy plate products. The equipment is exposed to highly corrosive environments, high pressures, and high temperatures for the construction of pressure vessels, tanks, heat exchangers, piping systems, flanges, fittings, valves, and pumps.
Chemical and petrochemical processing plants are often downstream operations of petroleum refineries that convert petroleum feedstocks into petrochemicals. Modern plants are often multipurpose, and the trend of alloy selection is toward high-performance alloys resistant to many types of corrosive environments. Specialty chemical and fine chemical plants are usually smaller in size and are not as tied to a refineries location.
Chemical reactions at high temperatures, as well as medium and ambient temperatures, often generate highly corrosive operating conditions. Reagents, catalysts, and stabilizers can have oxidizing or reducing effects and may contain aggressive acids, bases, chlorides, and salts.
Because of the breath of corrosive conditions encountered in chemical and petrochemical processing, a wide range of Sandmeyer Steel Company’s stainless steels and nickel alloy plate products are utilized for many different applications.
